The thousand and one nights of Macao

Today, the former Portuguese colony is a capital of gambling, casinos and night time fun. Like Las Vegas, but more

Once a nostalgic Portuguese colony and nowadays a Special Administrative region of the People’s Republic of China, it took just over a decade (from 20/12/1999 to today) for Macao to become the gambling capital of the Asian world. Much bigger than Las Vegas.

When the Chinese government ended the gambling monopoly in 2001, the American gambling and casino giants set up stall in the region, taking their inspiration directly from the originals located in Nevada: so we have the monumental Wynn Venetian or the Sands MGM, making an estimated revenue of 44 billion dollars in 2013.

Even if Macao’s Portuguese heritage and millenarian Chinese culture continue to coexist alongside one another, the main attraction of Macao is now reflected in the glittering casino lights in this megalopolis that never sleeps.
