Japan Experience in July: calendar of traditional festivals

Japan: a land of ancient traditions, a country enlightened by modern technology. When is best to explore Tokyo and its surrounding area? July is a good month with its packed calendar of traditional festivals.

There are only a few days to go until the Mitama Matsuri lantern festival. From 13th to 16th July, twenty thousand small lights will celebrate people’s ancestors, with stalls full of crafts and traditional food.

This is followed by the Sumida Festival: along the river between the Sakurabashi, Kototoibashi and Komagatabashi Bridges, fireworks have been used since 1600 to drive out evil spirits from the city.

The Ashinoko Kosui Matsuri will come to a close on 31st July, a re-enactment in honour of the spirit of the dragon that watches over Lake Ashi. Monks from the sanctuary sail on the lake throwing offerings to this deified creature, while floating lanterns (toro-nagashi) brighten up the water.
