Royal Ascot is the most eagerly awaited event of the English summer season, as well as the most famous horse racing meeting in the world. Every year since it was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, horses and jockeys have competed in various races, such as the Royal Hunt Cup, the Gold Cup and The Queen’s Vase.

There are twenty-six days of flat racing at Ascot each year between May and October, while jumps races are more of a feature of the winter season. The most prestigious race? The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes which is run in July.

It is also an important, long-awaited event for high society, when ladies traditionally flaunt hats in exuberant shapes and colours. Indeed, Ascot has a formal dress code: highly refined in the Royal Enclosure – where the Royal family watches the racing – but less strict in the Grand Stand or the Silver Ring for the still elegant commoners.
