It was 1937 when the musical comedy Babes in Arms (from Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart) opened for the first time on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre. Two years later, the film version with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. More than the musical comedy, the songs of Babes in Arms became famous all over the world as pop standards, just like The Lady is a Tramp (after many versions, recently it has been played and recorded by Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, too) and My Funny Valentine.

My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Un-photographable
Yet you’re my favourite work of art

This show tune had a great success after the comedy musical of 1937, where, in the original play, Billie Smith (played by Mitzi Green) sings the song to Valentine “Val” LaMar (played by Ray Heatherton); he pokes fun at some of Valentine’s characteristics, but at the end, she affirms that he makes her smile and that she doesn’t want him to change.

This popular jazz standard, part of the Great American Songbook, was recorded by several international artists (over 600): among them, Andy Williams, Bill Evans, Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Costello, Miles Davis, Nico, Shirley Bassey and the unique and unforgettable Frank Sinatra.

For Valentine’s Day, BeSpoke chooses The Voice’s version. Enjoy it!

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don’t change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is Valentine’s Day
