Wonderful Dita

«I can’t live without my red lipstick, I really love bright colour on my lips. When I was a little girl I loved watching movies with my mother in Technicolor and I remember being attracted to the red lipstick on the women. It’s classic and never goes out of style»

The most famous burlesque dancer in the world, actress, model and retro-style icon Dita Von Teese, born Heather Renée Sweet, was born in Rochester, Michigan; her father was a machinist and her mother a manicurist. Since the early age, she was trained as a ballet dancer and nurtured her passion for Golden Age-era Hollywood films of the Forties.

After moving to California as a teenager, her mother bought her her first bra made of plain white cotton, and gave her a plastic egg containing a pair of wrinkly, flesh-colored tights: very disappointed by this not so sensual style, she started working in a lingerie store as a salesgirl in order to earn money and buy lingerie that brought out her idea of womanliness. She dreamed of beautiful lacy garments and stockings, pearls and feathers, the kind she had seen in Playboy magazines.

This passion for vintage clothes made Dita study historic costuming in college, in those years she aspired to work as a stylist for films and theatre.

Her career as icon, dancer, model and actress got off the ground with her first striptease in a strip club when she was 19.

She immediately stood out for her charm and class thanks to her retro look inspired by the Forties: beehive jet black hairstyle, elbow gloves, corsets and garters, red lipstick and defined eyebrows.

«I want to show people that striptease is not a dirty thing. Some people say that what I do isn’t very liberating. I say it’s pretty liberating to get $20,000 for 10 minute of work». She started working as a fashion model for fetish softcore magazines and soon she became the icon reference for many artists in the world, most of all French, who still today see in Dita the reincarnation of the new Moulin Rouge’s diva.

In December 2002 she posed for Playboy cover, fulfilling her childhood dream. From this moment on she became Dita von Teese [...].
