Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton and Irving Penn are but a few of the photographers lucky enough to immortalise the beauty of Audrey Hepburn. The British dancer and actress rose through the ranks of London’s West End, Broadway and Hollywood, receiving many awards and such critical acclaim that she quickly became a style icon.

She performed with Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper and Humphrey Bogart and was chosen by Colette as the lead role for “Gigi”. She was an inspiration for the designer Givenchy and even a UNICEF ambassador.

Given her very caring nature, once her film career was over she set off on her travels to help the “third” world, although she did not like to call it as such. She has become an icon that the National Portrait Gallery is today celebrating at an exhibit dedicated to one of Hollywood’s most important stars.
